Ice Cream Soup

This is what I do.

I lay in bed.
I eat sherbet.
and I watch Battlestar Galactica.

This is what I do.

I walk by a sink of dirty dishes
and I throw in a spoon.

But I put the sherbet back in the freezer.
because it’s velvety and creamy raspberry
just like the package reads.
And I won’t have that luxurious consistency
melt at my bedside
As I frequently do with chocolate ice cream.

Heels hit into the floor
into my room.
I catch the reflection of my hips
looking bigger than last year
and all I can think about
is that I want more mirrors.

This is what I do.

I lay in bed
in panties and a bangle.
and I write poetry.

I think of a man I’m fond of.
I think about him thinking about me.
I find peace.
I find quiet.

I’m not looking for anything.
Just breathing steady.

Blinking slows to heavy laps
forward and back
forward
and back

draw the curtains
and open for a standing ovation
bow
relax

there’s no more demand.
sleep, as you can.

tomorrow,
do once again.

About Jessica Lee

Jessica is a twenty-something poet who performs most of her work on stage in Spoken Word. She has found writing therapeutic since she was child, and has pursued it ceaselessly. She enjoys writing even the most fleeting thoughts and dreams as SensicalRavings. Between long retail shifts, she enjoys writing observational pieces (always with a slant) of locally relevant subjects as ALLGainesville. If you appreciate inspiring, coming-of-age suppositions, become a follower. Though it's not always roses, it's raw!
